Collection One of my chief assignments at Universiti Malaysia Sabah has been the setting-up of a reference collection for land snails (terrestrial Pulmonata and Prosobranchia). This collection forms part of the Borneensis collection of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation. It currently (January 2005) contains over 70,000 specimens in some 3,600 samples. These are mostly kept dry, but there is also a sizeable (several hundreds of samples) wet collection. Over the past five years, the collection was built from scratch with material collected throughout Sabah with the help of Liew Thor Seng, Jacqeline King, Tracy Kimsin, Chai Hsieh-Nee, and many other students. Also, a lot of reference samples were donated by Jaap Vermeulen and Wim Maassen. All samples have been identified and databased in a MS-Access format designed by Jaap Vermeulen.
